SUMMARY

To observe, according to the Online Etymological Dictionary, has its Latin root in the word obver – vare: “to look at with attention”. The morphological construction is: prefix ob- (in front) and servare (to have, keep, conserve). That is, we keep, have and conserve what is in front of our eyes. That which we put in front of us, which we keep and conserve is one of the oldest actions of humanity: it is a way of constructing memory and the sense of the world. Looking and observing and, above all, how we look and what we observe, is part of a political and cultural construction. Hence, all observation depends on the subject’s hermeneutics, on his or her interpretative capacity and, therefore, depends on three factors: the referential world, the capacity to find multiple meanings and the critical look at the observed phenomenon.
